The Dane has played just three league games this term following the arrival of Tomasz Kuszczak, but is insisting he can reclaim the number one spot.

And he denies being unhappy at the lack of first-team football he has been afforded by Gus Poyet as Brighton prepare to make an assault on the play-offs.

He told bold.dk: "As long as I am close to the team, and the club has yet to tell me otherwise, then I will stay and fight for the place. I assume we will start from scratch next season.

"I feel I'm not too far away from the starting line-up. I played against Forest and Middlesbrough, when Kuszczak was out sick and then injured and those opportunities were better than nothing I guess.

"I think it went well against Middlesbrough seeing as we won 2-0. Had I played a couple of more games then I would have gotten the job.

"But Tomasz has been playing well all season so the manager is not interested in changing things, which I think is fair. I don't have any problems with that."

The 33-year-old is now focusing on the future and one he hopes will be in the top tier of English football.

"It would be fantastic to play in the Premier League. This is something everyone at the club would love to happen," he added.

"Next season we will definitely see some new faces whether we go up or not, and the club is getting more and more ready for it (promotion).

"We have one of the best stadiums in England. The training facility is not excellent but they are already rebuilding and improving.

"Brighton is a club that is interested in developing on all fronts. It would be fantastic if we could make the play-offs."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.
