The England international completed a switch to the Britannia Stadium from Birmingham City earlier in the summer, with a deal having been struck between the clubs back in January.

It was agreed at that time that Butland would be allowed to stay on at St Andrew's and see out the season in the Blues' first team.

He ended the campaign as an ever-present in the Championship, earned himself a first England cap and rounded off a memorable 12 months, which also included involvement at the 2012 Olympics, by stepping up into the Premier League.

Butland has made rapid progress since bursting onto the goalkeeping scene and concedes that, at just 20 years of age, it may be of greater benefit to him to take in a short-term spell away from Stoke, rather than occupy a spot on their bench.

"It is difficult because I want to be playing," he told Sky Sports News.

"But it's also been a realisation that I've got to picture myself and say, I'm 20 years old, I'm not old, I'm a very, very young goalkeeper in terms of playing in the Premier League, even in the Championship. I've got to maybe say 'okay' and sit back and see what's going, but I need to continue playing games.

"If playing in the Premier League doesn't happen this year, then I will be fighting and giving everything I've got to be playing next year.

"We'll see what happens and if a loan move is the right thing to do, then that will happen. I just need to do the right thing for my development and my career, which is play games. We will see what is the best option and go from there."

On his short time at Stoke, Butland added: "I had a fantastic time at Birmingham and I never regret anything that happened there. But I think I have got a new lease of life, if you know what I mean, coming to here - a Premier League environment and getting to work with some fantastic goalkeepers and players and coaches as well.

"I feel I have improved and I'm really enjoying my time here."

ou can't blame De Gea for wanting to leave, he has enough to do in front of goal as it is as well as taking on the role of Man Utd's version of Derek Acorah in trying to contact and organise a defence that isn't there.

f you want to take six points off Arsenal, then that's a great strike force. Can't imagine either of them showing much for the rest of the season though...
