Four fresh faces have been welcomed into the ranks this summer, with Mame Biram Diouf, Steve Sidwell, Phil Bardsley and Dionatan Teixeira acquired for a minimal outlay.

Stoke are also working on moving those out who no longer figure in their long-term plans.

Freeing up space would allow Hughes to dip back into the transfer market, and chief executive Tony Scholes says the groundwork is being done to ensure that the right moves are made.

He told the Sentinel: "We are still working on one or two things and, as I've said before, we look to do the right business, for the right players, for the right price.

"The sooner you can sign players in a summer the better, and we've been really pleased with the four deals we've managed to do so far.

"If we are able to do the one or two others we are looking at then that will be great, and maybe we will, maybe we won't."

Scholes added: "Mark, like most managers, likes to get his business done early, before the players are back for training on July 9.

"We often talk about players getting a good pre-season behind them, and if you can get the squad of players together for the full five-and-a-half weeks of pre-season it helps a lot.

"There's no such thing as a free deal. There's only one that we have paid an actual transfer fee for, the others are sizeable deals as well; we are talking about good players."

was there, it was embarrassing - the team looked totally unbalanced from the off, the defence was woeful and when Mikel came off injured it got even worse with nobody in front of them. Up front on several occasions we had opportunities and nobody would shoot - it was a complete farse! On the back of Salah's performance I'm glad there is talk of getting shot...

reat to see Tommy Rosicky getting some love. A wonderful player. Such a pity we lost so long to injury. I was so excited when we signed him, this resurgence only makes the absences seem more of a lost opportunity.
