Black Cats winger Johnson starred with his first Premier League hat-trick but admits the three points were more important as Sunderland lifted themselves off the bottom of the table.

Gus Poyet's men have been entrenched in the bottom three since losing to Fulham on the opening day of the season, but raced to only their second away win this season.

Four goals take Sunderland ahead of Crystal Palace on goal difference and Johnson claims the result far outweighs the personal glory.

"It's just an amazing result for us," he told Sky Sports.

"Personally, to get three goals, it's just a great day for me but more importantly we needed that win and I think we're right back in the mix now."

Johnson terrorised the Fulham defence from the off and won a free-kick on the edge of the box when he was taken down by Steve Sidwell.

The 11-cap England international converted the set-piece with a venomous strike, curling over the wall and into the top corner.

Sunderland continued to dominate throughout the first period and Johnson turned provider as he slid a free-kick to Ki Sung-yueng on the edge of the box, before the South Korean fired home his first open-play Premier League goal.

Ki then returned the favour, laying an inch-perfect ball into the path of Johnson after a classic counter-attack on 69 minutes before the former Middlesbrough youngster rounded off the perfect afternoon from the penalty spot late in the second half.

It was a second victory of the week for Poyet's men after they prevailed 2-1 in the first leg of their Capital One Cup semi-final against Manchester United and Johnson insists morale in camp is soaring.

"I think our confidence is quite high to be honest, I think we've played well these last few games," he added.

"I think it's been coming, today was our rewards for our hard work and I thought we thoroughly deserved it."

ell that really inspires me with confidence. No point in training, deciding on a coherent formation, or playing players in their best positions, let's just hope we get lucky.

alcao really needs to shine now. Apparently according to the stats, he scores more when played up front alone. I wonder if Van Gaal will actually apply a formation to get the best out of him though.
