Noble has been struggling with a trapped nerve in his shoulder and the midfielder's last appearance came in the defeat at Aston Villa last month.

West Ham were hoping rest might help the injury, but they have now decided to send the influential midfielder for an operation on his shoulder which is likely to be on Wednesday.

The operation is likely to rule Noble out for a month, meaning he faces an uphill battle to return before the end of the campaign.

The news is a major blow for West Ham boss Sam Allardyce as the likes of Kevin Nolan and Joe Cole are already on the sidelines as they look to secure their Premier League survival.
