The Latics made their European bow on Belgian soil on Thursday, and collected their first point after displaying commendable fighting spirit.

The 2013 FA Cup winners came close to forcing a breakthrough of their own in a rain-soaked Group D encounter, but had to withstand a second-half onslaught from the hosts before claiming a share of the spoils.

Coyle was delighted to see Wigan's dogged determination rewarded and feels his players, along with 2,500 travelling supporters, have every reason to be proud of their performance.

He said: "We knew that at different periods we were going to have to stand up and defend well.

"I said before the game that Zulte Waregem have some very good attacking players, and nothing has altered my opinion.

"We knew that and obviously they were the home team and trying to push on late in the game.

"Having said that, as much as we had to defend well, if we had taken care a little bit more on the counter-attack we could have scored a couple of goals ourselves.

"From start to finish it was an outstanding debut in European football for everyone associated with the football club.

"The players performed out of their skins and defended well when they had to.

"And to have 2,500 fans travel over here in the torrential rain... They sang their hearts out and gave the players a lot to fight for.

"Equally, the players are sending them home with a smile on their face tonight because it is certainly a well-earned point. I am delighted overall."

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
