Michael Timlin and David Martin both found the net to see the visiting Shrimpers coasting at half-time, but efforts from Nick Chadwick and Alex MacDonald, after 86 and 88 minutes respectively, levelled matters in the dying stages to leave Fletcher delighted.

"You can talk until you are blue in the face but it's the players that go out there and have to step over the white line, and when they have done that it's down to them," he said.

"The never-say-die attitude that we have got in the changing room at the minute is a rare thing. In my years as a player I have maybe seen it once or twice. If you can channel it in the right way and keep hold of it, it's a real bonus for the football club.

"Obviously we were disappointed to concede so quickly but that's football and you deal with it and get on with it and there were highs and lows out there as the game progressed.

"At the end of the day, it's the lads' character and their will to get back into the game and do well for themselves and the club that was a real credit to them."

his is for the best, his hunger would be in serious question now after winning everything with us. A true Chelsea legend, up there with Osgood and Zola, come back and see us now and then Didier. And as Martin Tyler said on Saturday night....he is immortal at Chelsea. What a way to go out eh....Good luck big man wherever you land next.

ne of the many delights of the final few seconds of the season was seeing little Mike Owen with his trackie off and full replica kit on, getting ready to celebrate having contributed NOTHING all season. Would have been on a par with Terry's carry-on in Munich.
