Ferguson led Aberdeen to three Scottish Premier League titles before he was lured to Old Trafford in November 1986.

His greatest triumph with the Dons came in May 1983 though, when Ferguson tasted his first continental success as his charges beat Real Madrid 2-1 in Gothenburg to claim the European Cup Winners' Cup.

An Aberdeen statement read: "Everyone at Aberdeen Football Club wishes Sir Alex a long and happy retirement following this morning's announcement.

"His contribution, both to Manchester United and Aberdeen, will quite simply never be matched, and it is fitting in many ways, that he has confirmed that he is stepping down just three days before the 30th anniversary of that never to be forgotten night in Gothenburg."

m not sure about this distance covered malarky, plus that stat comes with *since February attached to it, that's just 1 month. I just got back from a pub lunch, scampi and chips (+4 pints) in case you were wondering.
