The former Middlesbrough, Celtic and Southampton boss is hoping to bring about a reversal in fortunes for the Scots on the international stage.

There are important 2014 World Cup qualifiers to come, but for now Strachan is looking to get his tenure off to a winning start.

Scotland will face Estonia at Aberdeen's Pittodrie home with a number of familiar faces drafted back into their ranks.

Lee Wallace has been included for the first time since Rangers were dropped into the Scottish Third Division, while Birmingham winger Chris Burke and Leeds forward Ross McCormack have also been recalled.

"I've named a big squad for this match because I feel that it's important to get as many of the players together as possible ahead of my first match as national coach," said Strachan.

"I want to have a strong squad for the match against Estonia, which will help us to prepare for the World Cup qualifying double-header against Wales and Serbia in March.

"I'm looking forward to getting started in earnest, and can't wait to lead the team out at Pittodrie next week."

Scotland's 28-man squad for a friendly date with Estonia on 6th February:

Goalkeepers: Matt Gilks (Blackpool), David Marshall (Cardiff City), Allan McGregor (Besiktas)

Defenders: Phil Bardsley (Sunderland), Christophe Berra (Wolverhampton Wanderers), Gary Caldwell (Wigan Athletic), Grant Hanley (Blackburn Rovers), Alan Hutton (Real Mallorca), Russell Martin (Norwich City), Charlie Mulgrew (Celtic), Lee Wallace (Rangers), Andy Webster (Heart of Midlothian)

Midfielders: Charlie Adam (Stoke City), Scott Brown (Celtic), Chris Burke (Birmingham City), Kris Commons (Celtic), James Forrest (Celtic), James McArthur (Wigan Athletic), James Morrison (West Bromwich Albion), Matt Phillips (Blackpool), Robert Snodgrass (Norwich City)

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.

afa has to be favourite for the Everton job now, surely :) He'll realise his ambition to live and work on Merseyside again, get the best out of whoever plays for them, maybe win some cups and be thoroughly loathed by the toffee fans. What's not to like? Go ead, Ken, gimajob!

hat is arguably the least inspiring England I have ever seen. There is not a single name in that list that makes me think I might actually want to watch this team. Not a one.
