Joe Hart: One nervous moment when he dribbled outside the box but hardly anything else to do. 6.

Kyle Walker: Set the tone with forceful attacking burst to create early chance. 7.

Ashley Cole (off 46): Usual effective performance going forward and little defending to do. Replaced at the break. 7.

Steven Gerrard: Broke a scoring duck of more than three years with brilliant low finish. 7.

Gary Cahill: Kept Moldova at bay with ease and found time to make a nuisance of himself at the other end 7.

Phil Jagielka: One of those nights when his job was to marshal rather than intervene. 6.

Theo Walcott: Took some rough treatment early on, which is what got Hodgson so wound up. His shot created Lambert goal. 7.

Frank Lampard: Cap number 99 for the 35-year-old and will probably reach three figures on Tuesday. Assist for Gerrard's opener. 6.

Danny Welbeck: A pair of excellent finishes to take his England tally to eight. Yellow card means he misses Kiev. 9.

Jack Wilshere(off 58): One mazy dribble and got clipped as well. Other than that, a quiet night for the Arsenal man. 7.

Rickie Lambert (off 70): Couple of early chances on first start before reaction finish. Then claimed two assists. 8.

Substitutes

Leighton Baines (on 46): World have been first cap as a Manchester United player had week turned out differently. Not much to do. 6.

Ross Barkley (on 58): Almost emulated Lambert by scoring on his debut. 7.

James Milner (on 70): Looks to be most likely replacement for Welbeck given 20-minute run-out on left side. 7.

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

Wenger hails important win

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
