Jones hoping for central role

Phil Jones admits his versatility is becoming a bit of a pain as he tries to seal a regular role in the heart of the Manchester United defence.

Phil Jones: Is he United's long-term answer at centre-back??

Jones has been playing a variety of roles for United this season, lining up in midfield to counter Gareth Bale's threat against Tottenham and slotting in at right-back when Rafael is unavailable.

The 20-year-old then moved to the heart of Sir Alex Ferguson's back-four in the easy FA Cup win over Fulham on Saturday and he would love to be able to establish himself in a role he favours.

"I have said all along centre-half is where I feel most comfortable," said Jones. "I understand and read the game better there.

"It was certainly not a problem playing at the back with Chris Smalling on Saturday. We have played quite a lot together for England U21s and we understand each other's game.

"In a way, I kind of shoot myself in the foot a bit by being able to play in other positions, but I am at Manchester United and I love playing for this club.

"I didn't have a great start to the season because of injury but hopefully I can push my way into the side and get some games under my belt, so really I am happy to play anywhere."

Jones also added his voice to the chorus hailing Robin van Persie for the impact he has made in his first season at Old Trafford.

He added: "All credit to Robin. He has come in and been unbelievable for us this season.

"He has got lots of goals. But we have got other players who are just as good, as Javier and Wayne proved against Fulham. With four strikers firing on all cylinders at the moment the manager has got a tough decision who to play."

s there a PR agency covering Begovich, Odemwingie, Steven Fletcher and Grant Holt or something? Why would you offer a quote like that without having been announced by either club. #headsshoulderskneesandtoesgone

adly this is inevitable. No club outside the top 4/5 can hang on to anyone who shows that kind of talent anymore. Might be best for them to get as much as they can now while his stock is high and start again. On the plus side lads, Grant Holt is still available.
