The 27-year-old was making his comeback from a foot injury sustained on the opening day of the season and the timing could not have been more poignant.

Edwards, a boyhood Shrews fan, made 132 appearances for Town before departing in 2007 and had family split between the home and away ends at the Greenhous Meadow.

He finally stepped off the bench to a rousing reception from both sets of supporters midway through the second half before duly helping Wolves claim a 1-0 derby victory thanks to Bakary Sako's late penalty.

"It was lovely, I had a lump in my throat, it is such a nice thing when they clap you," he told Wanderers' official website.

"I was probably the most nervous I've been for a football match stood on the sidelines waiting to come on, and that includes playing at Old Trafford and my Wales debut in Germany.

"Saturday was the most nervous I've been - I just wanted to get on the pitch, come off injury-free and get the points.

"I'd only ever played against Shrewsbury in a friendly before, a few seasons ago. But it was in front of a full house on Saturday and it's all that everyone has been talking about for the last three months.

"I think with it being the club I supported, and I didn't just play for them, like a lot of the Wolves fans who travelled I was a boyhood fan and I supported them home and away from the age of seven or eight, I played for the away supporters clubs - all these little things which I don't think a lot of people are aware of.

"The club has got a big place in my heart and to get the reception I got was amazing."

ood grief. Someone guessed that the form English player at the moment might be in his national side with some other players? And that's espionage? Now if they discovered that Emile Heskey was going to be in the starting line up.... at right back.... THAT would be espionage. Give it a rest Roy.
