David Syers scored inside the opening minute to set Rovers on their way to a second win in four days after defeating Oldham on Boxing Day.
David Cotterill doubled the visitors' advantage with a long-range free-kick after 30 minutes before Billy Paynter sealed the 3-0 win from the penalty spot in the 76th minute.
Saunders' side are now just a point behind Tranmere with a game in hand and the Doncaster boss is keen to strengthen his squad in the January transfer window.
"We're up there in a good position, the team keeps improving and I can probably add names to it," said the Welshman.
"If we win our game in hand we can go two points clear, so we're up there and in a good position and 46 points before January 1st is a points total I think any manager would take.
"They have to listen to me every day and it's hard work for them because they want to play five-a-side every day - but we can't. We have to be organised because that's what gets us the results, and credit to them they listen to me.
"We've treated the away games exactly as the same as the home games and we probably find it easier to win away. It's the same football pitch. What's the difference? The crowd can probably affect the home team - it's psychological.
"We played well and controlled the game throughout. They didn't even have a chance, did they? We worked on the set piece for the opening goal and it's nice when it comes off."
