Having repeatedly expressed his shock and horror at the scenes of devastation across London via his twitter account, the England defender has now applauded the decision to postpone Wednesday's international against Holland in order to allow the Metropolitan Police to focus all their resources on restoring order to the streets.
"England vs Holland game is off, good call. Who wants to see a game of football when our country is in turmoil," he tweeted.
"I can't tell the youths exactly what to do but stealing tv's + trainers+burning innocent peoples houses+shops aint solving nothing at all."
Ferdinand, born and raised in Peckham, has been a prolific tweeter over the past twenty-four hours from inside England's training base, with his remarks displaying a responsibility and social awareness that is, unfortunately, all too rarely apparent in football.
"The scenes on Sky news right now are shocking..what is this all in aid of?? Innocent peoples homes + livelihoods have gone up in smoke-why?" he wrote during the early hours of Tuesday morning.
"And I am not saying bring violence, I am saying the presence of the army may make these kids/people think twice about continuing this??
"It seems these kids/people have no fear or respect for the police....maybe the army will get that respect??
"I can't sleep, I've got the news stations on watching the coverage of the riots. this is a madness."
