The Seasiders have been without a boss since Ian Holloway decided to take the Crystal Palace post, saying he felt he had taken Blackpool as far as he could.
And Portsmouth manager Appleton has been strongly linked with the position since the weekend, although he said on Tuesday that he had not held talks with Blackpool.
Other names mentioned in connection with the Bloomfield Road post include Paul Ince, whose son Tom plays for Blackpool, and the former Bolton boss Owen Coyle.
