Lambert: Sub Bent did fine

Aston Villa manager Paul Lambert admitted he was happy enough with the performance of striker Darren Bent in his side's 0-0 draw at home to Stoke City.

The hosts extended their unbeaten run to four games, despite drawing a blank at Villa Park.

And not even the introduction of the England international as a second-half substitute could spark a breakthrough against a resilient Potters side.

"He (Bent) did fine. It's hard to come on and adjust to the game, but I thought he did fine," Lambert told Sky Sports.

But when asked if he thinks Bent will start Villa's next Premier League game at Liverpool alongside Christian Benteke, Lambert was quick to deflect the question.

"Listen, the most important thing is the team. That's the most important thing and it always is," he added.

"I think they're playing really well and we're improving all the time."

Villa have netted only 12 times in 16 Premier League games and despite an improved display, both sides left with a point.

Lambert said: "I thought we dominated the game. I was delighted with the way we coped with Stoke's strength.

"I thought we were excellent. Some of the football we're playing has been very good. We just need the finishing touch.

"I just thought the (3-5-2) formation would benefit us and I thought the players adapted brilliantly to it.

"The fans have been excellent ever since I've been here. This place has been rocking and the fans are seeing what we're trying to do"
