Rain: Has caused a number of postponements

Blackburn's Championship fixture against Brighton was the first match of the day in English football's second tier to be called off as wet weather disrupted the sporting programme.

The heavy rainfall affecting much of the country forced the cancellation of the

Ewood Park clash due to a waterlogged pitch.

A post on Blackburn's official Twitter feed read: "Today's match against Brighton has been called off due to a waterlogged pitch. A new date will be arranged in due course."

The League Two match between York and leaders Gillingham at Bootham Crescent fell victim to the heavy rain and was called off following an early pitch inspection.

A statement on York's official website read: "After a pitch inspection was conducted this morning by match referee Stephen Martin, today's match between the Minstermen and Gillingham has been postponed.

"After heavy rain overnight, the pitch is now waterlogged and deemed unplayable by the match official.

"A new rearranged date for the fixture will be announced later."

The Conference Premier matches between Gateshead and Stockport and Newport and Braintree were also called off because of waterlogged pitches.

Racing was also affected, with this afternoon's meeting at Navan cancelled because of a waterlogged track.

Officials at the County Meath circuit were left with no other option following an early-morning course inspection.

The postponements continued with the match between League One bottom side Hartlepool and fellow strugglers Portsmouth called off at 9am.

A statement on the Hartlepool website read: "Today's game with Portsmouth has been postponed after referee Darren Bond carried out a second inspection of the Victoria Park pitch.

"Heavy rain throughout the week has left the playing surface extremely wet and more showers this morning caused concern for the match official.

"With forecasts suggesting further heavier rain is on the way later this morning and in to the afternoon - and with the knowledge of visiting fans making a long journey - the referee felt there was no alternative but to call the game off."
