Frank Lampard has hailed David Luiz's value to Chelsea, with the Brazilian currently starring in a midfield role.

Luiz was brought to Stamford Bride with the intention of bringing ball-playing ability to their back four.

His desire to stride forward from the back has not always benefitted the Blues, but Luiz's enthusiasm and commitment to the collective cause has never been in question.

It is possible that he has now found the ideal position from which to operate, with a holding role in the middle of the park making the most of his defensive qualities and attacking instincts.

Lampard feels Luiz is made for the post, telling Chelsea's official website in the wake of an 8-0 mauling of Aston Villa: "He has the ability to play either position and he's been a fantastic central defender.

"People say that central midfield is also a role for him and I think they are right.

"You still have to have discipline and be in the right position, and you can't take liberties, and against Villa he showed he has the discipline and the ability to do that role."

Rewards

Lampard also claims that no-one in the Stamford Bridge camp was surprised to see Luiz rattle home a spectacular 25-yard free-kick against Villa.

He added: "You don't see the hours put in on the training pitch to work on that technique.

"David has done it and now you are seeing the rewards, because every time we get a free-kick in that area you fancy him to get it on target."
