Brad Friedel: Fighting Hugo Lloris in the battle for a first-team place

The goalkeeper, whose previous deal was due to expire at the end of the season, is now committed to the club until the summer of 2014.

Friedel will be 43 by the time his latest contract is up, and there were suggestions he might look for first-team football elsewhere after losing his place to Hugo Lloris.

But Spurs' announcement ends any immediate prospect of Blackburn persuading their former keeper to return to Ewood Park.

Friedel tweeted: "Very happy about the new contract! As I have always said I'm very happy here and will help Spurs in any role!!"

The Premier League's oldest player will now resume rivalry with Lloris for the No 1 role at White Hart Lane.

Andre Villas-Boas has preferred the France captain in recent weeks, and Friedel's one start in the past nine matches came against Panathinaikos in the Europa League.
