Chrisanderson, I'm not sure United wanted to sign Henderson. We know they looked at him, but decided against a bid.

How can you say that "it's unlikely the 22-year-old will ever justify his hefty price tag" when he is JUST 22 years old, and he's the captain of England U-21's? With Carrick signing for Manchester United for as much money, and (at the time) 3 years older than Henderson, I think it's ridiculous you can draw a line under Henderson's improvement and state something purely on guess work. With Manchester United wanting to sign Henderson for £20m, we took a potential world-class, ENGLISH, young midfielder from under the noses of a rival at a slightly inflated (but not completely unreasonable in the marketplace) price. Because he was played for over 50 games last season, and 99% of those out of position, he shouldn't be painted as a failure, he's got great potential - a lot more so than any of the other midfielders on the list, but I guess that's the point of the article.

Barry and Carrick are both very good players, who perform well in the Premier League. The reason some people have poor opinions of them is they both got taken apart in high profile games - Carrick twice in Champions League Finals by two of the best 5 players in the world and an unfit Barry against an insanely dynamic German team in the World Cup. Unfair in my mind, they're both excellent, just not on the same level as the very best.

redgenesis, if United wanted to they could have bought a new midfielder. The truth is that Carrick was never as bad as the critics made out, he was just a convenient scapegoat. It's easier and more fun to point the finger at him than it is to accept that Fergie got out-thought and out played by superior Barca side containing three or four of the very best players in the world in their positions. Xavi and Iniesta have run rings round the finest in the world. Seedorf, Gatusso asnd Pirol didn't look so hot against them either, when Milan played Barca a few seasons back. The truth is that whilst he clearly has his flaws, he's a much better player than some give him credit for. That's my opinion anyway.

@HarryBoulton, its not that financial resources aren't there, but there aren't that many obvious and available midfielders around. Schweinsteiger, Pirlo, Xavi, Fabregas... compared to them, most others look rubbish, and yet that's what we need. Has Veron retired yet?

Barry isn't just not rated because of his extraordinary Terry-esq lack of pace (I still laugh at the footrace between Terry and Ibrahimovic). His technique is mediocre, his tackling is hardly legendary, his passing is always just the safe option (the Lampard-style sideways pass). He's like a poundland Makalele. Ramsey, on the other hand is a young player finally getting some games, in a pretty poor Arsenal side and trying to be Fabregas of a couple of years ago. He's a good player, and will grow in time as a perfect foil for Wilshere. The idea of lambasting a 22 year old in his big year while defending Barry and giving such praise to Carrick for his first good season since he joined United, is laughable.

Carrick silenced his critics? My arse has he... the flaws that have irritated still remain, just finally he has a suitable foil and the rest of his game is being more up to scratch. He is still slow to turn, his tackling is still pretty mediocre, he is still not that creative. We critics aren't silenced, he's still not good enough, just having a (well overdue) better season.

While I understand why Ramsey is on this list, I thought the paragraph written for him was a little harsh. If this was written about Ramsey last season, I would understand. He was poor then, from fatigue and/or lack of experience. But he is actually having a pretty good season, all things considered, and looks closer to himself pre-injury than ever before. Whether he has actually improved substantially or my expectations have just been lowered, I'm not sure...

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.
