Manager Alan Pardew is confident his Newcastle side can progress even further in the Europa League after Thursday's narrow victory over Metalist Kharkiv.
m curious as to what image Real Madrid are trying to re-establish as I always thought their pre-Jose image was one of a bunch of a classless bullies tapping up whoever they wanted while living it large on borrowed money they're never going to pay back.

@mccabecol, you're right, we were. However we didn't manage to score in normal time (at least not given goals), and only got through thanks to a penalty that on watching the replays I'd argue was 'soft' in the extreme. Goryainov got his foot to the ball, and given his position I don't think it was reckless but Sissoko went down. Not sure there's even contact. Luck was a big factor over those two matches, both good and bad.

I don't see how going into the return leg at 0-0, when you should be 2-0 up is "lucky".

Well I'm pleased. It's an interesting competition because you don't really know how good any of the teams are at this point, and I wouldn't say there is a clear favourite in the competition. I know Anzhi gave Liverpool a bit of trouble so I expect it to be tight. Guess we'll see what happens, I've no idea what to expect to be honest with you.

Thought the penalty was soft but Newcastle deserved something over the two legs so justice was done in the end.
