Manchester City boss Roberto Mancini claims Manchester United have been lucky in building their substantial lead at the Premier League summit.
m curious as to what image Real Madrid are trying to re-establish as I always thought their pre-Jose image was one of a bunch of a classless bullies tapping up whoever they wanted while living it large on borrowed money they're never going to pay back.
t the start of the season, after the RVP transfer, I confidently claimed that Arsenal would finish above United. I now regret it immensely.
aniel Storey generally did very well, going against the City won it last year so they're bound to win it this time grain. As for John Nicholson, I wouldn't trust him to predict correctly what day of the week it will be tomorrow.

@fishcake...It was his point, that's why he said "Mancinis point is that after winning the title you can't just stand still" right at the beginning. I don't necessarily agree because I think our squad is stronger (on paper) this year. Nastasic for Savic, Garcia plus Rodwell for De Jong. We haven't performed on the pitch as well, but then we're currently comfortably in second, so I don't see that as a disaster either.

@Bernstein....Its important when people are trying to push myths down peoples throats....and sorry, that wasn't the point he was making either, he quite cleary keeps banging on about this '10m net spend' which simply isn't true. Look I appreciate you guys are trying to get your excuses in early but Mancini is responsible for which players come and go, and none of his major targets were interested in playing for him, says all you need to know really.....oh and lets not ignore the fact that City have spent the second highest in Prem history eh? To say you haven't spent enough is laughable.....you just have a rubbish manager!

bigdave - The director of football is basically someone who deals with all the admin etc that a football manager would not be qualified/would not have time to deal with such as brokering deals and contracts. The frustration of Mancini towards Marwood during the summer was the fact that none of the deals for his main targets came off, maybe not Marwood fault as part of his remit would be to work within a certain wage budget which may have meant he could not move for certain players until others were moved on from the club. Mancinis frustration seemed to be that little preperation had gone into what would happen in the summer meaning it was a slow process. The director of football role makes sense as at the end of the day a manager should be focussing solely on the football side of a club.

@fishcake....So you really think the fact it's being paid in installments is important? What Peter's talking about is the playing assets available to the club this season compared to last.

@Peter.....Ok Pete, if that makes City's complete and utter failure this season easier for you to take, believe what ever you like. For the rest of us....the FACTS are freely available on the web....I wonder how many other idiots there are that dont know the difference between £'s and ¿'s, or understand what 'installments' means??!!

My point is only to illustrate that Mancini has little defence other than his players under-performing, which I'm afraid is his remit. This whinging about not getting the funds to invest is not plausible. He had plenty, he just didn't spend it well enough.

@petergriffin and others - what does everyone reckon to the 'Director of Football' role? Actually that's not really a coherent question, as it's a catch-all term for various roles at various clubs. I suppose what I'm asking is why would a club trust a manager to run the team, but have someone else deal with transfers? Surely a manager, along with scouting staff, identify who their targets are. Following this the owners/directors sign off on the spending, then that leaves the negotiations (ok it might not happen in that order but you get the idea). If at this stage there's someone else better placed to carry out the negotiations, that's fine. But surely only in line with what the manager wants? What did Marwood do wrong, what will Txiki be expected to do right, and what's the deal elsewhere? I admit to being fairly ignorant on the matter but the emergence of the 'Director of Football' kind of fascinates me.

Harry - the financial outlay of the 2 is not comparable because of the net spend for every player City have brought in they have saved money from the ones who have left (when you consider the wages of the likes of Adebayor probably saved money) but they have not stepped up the quality of the team either. Look City made a hash of the transfers in the summer leading to a scattergun approach to signings on deadline day to basically get bodies in. After narrowly losing the title last season United invested heavily in wages and transfer fees to improve thier squad and have successfully done so which is why thier doing so well in Europe and brilliant in the league. You can t not account for the player sales out when looking at the transfers over the season as obviously they effect the makeup of the squad.

@Peter.....Do you think you are talking to City fans in the pub or something? You're not in Division two now mate! That '22m' was the amount in EURO's and it is being paid over FIVE seasons because Milan are skint, so no, your figures are wrong. You spent over 50m in the summers, amongst the highest spending teams in Europe......and you're trying to make out that City have survived on a shoestring? 2nd highest spenders in Prem history, lack of spending is not an excuse for City....especially when the ONLY reason you didn't spend more was because none of your top targets were interested....and that will be the same this summer. No one wants to play for a small club in Manchester in front of 40k each week and routinely get knocked out of the CL at the first hurdle and certainly not when the Qatari's are offering more cash!
