@batwin - I'm pretty sure it was Nigeria. I remember thinking it was potentially borderline racist (I was an undergrad' at the time and searching for any evidence of any 'ism I could). However, I was also most likely p*ssed so you're probably right. I'm heading for Youtube to find it......Ah, memories.....This has been the best thread I can remember on 365 for a long time.

Well this made me feel young, I wasn't even a fan of football when most of these took place. Although my favourite has to be an FA Cup final, United vs Chelsea, can't remember when, all I remember was "DROGBAAAAA (the "ah" went on while the ball was still making it's way into the net) then it finally did and all he said was "YES!!" Another is the ESPN commentator Andy something, Eto'o was played clean in behind the defense, he could have ran toward the keeper and got an easy goal, instead he ran into the path of pass coming from behind, and without looking placed it cooly into the top corner, from outside the box mind you. What the commentator said? "Eto'ooooo, oh, have mercy". I remember my brother saying his words were perfect, and they were.

@Paulw66. I have never been Beckhams biggest fan, but on that day, at Old Trafford when we needed him, he was there. F**k was he good that day. It's still (to me) one of the best individual performances I've ever seen. The Free Kick capped it off. and the commentary along-side the freekick was superb.

Remember John Motson commentating for Leicester City (can't remember who they were playing), and he must have been waiting for years for the moment Muzzy Izzet went on a run dribbling passed a handful of defenders and scoring. His commentary went "Izzet .... Izzet ... Izzet ... yes it is!". Made me laugh, and still does!

The "extravagant nonsense" line was Barry Davies not John Motson. It was a fabulous piece of commentary, lesser commentators would have been eulogising, but Barry saw it for what it was. And I think it was Brazil that we're being so self-indulgent.

Back in the days (France 98 I believe) when South Korea were still a bit of a joke team in the eyes of the world, I remember one of their players, named Ha getting sent off. Kevin Keegan was co-commentating, and dropped in 'Ha's not laughing now'. And we thought Lawrenson was bad!

Great article, really enjoyed it and agree that Barry Davies really had/has it all. Just a quick comment because 'heisyouknow' reminded me of the hilarious (though not at the time) David Batty penalty with the Keegan curse in 1998. It was Brian Moore who was commentating with Kevin and he later apologised for it because Keegan was really left between a rock and a hard place, though it's funny to remember what DID happen, just imagine if Keegan had said "NO" and Batty had scored? I'd still be laughing about that now! In truth, what other answer could poor KK give?

I'm surprised no-one has mentioned John Motson's "Liverpool were strolling, they had United rolling, but when United needed to convince, they got a goal from Paul Ince" from around 1994. Kind of in the "so bad it's good" category. That was definitely set to music once; I remember them playing it on Fantasy Football League.

There was one commentator, I think it was John Motson, during the 1994 World Cup, who came out with one of my favourite lines. Nigeria were trying all sorts of flicks and step overs and he just sighed and said forlornly "well....that's just extravagent nonsense".
