Has Moyes Achieved Enough At Everton?

Although Everton have regularly finished in the top eight under David Moyes, has he achieved enough in his ten years to warrant all the praise? Johnny thinks not...

@ajsr1982 (liverpool) '' I'm not convinced of Moyes' success in the transfer market either, but unless you're spending more than £12m these days, things are always going to be hit and miss'' andy carroll - £35m.. enough said hahaha

I've been saying this for years but we (everton) have become so non-descript the only thing of interest is Moyes longevity. His and Kenwright's conversion of the club to a latter day Charlton mysteriously breeds support. Every excuse under the sun is made why we CAN'T the idea some clubs CAN with much less resource than the mighty blues is a cause for checking the pies at Goodison to see what drugs they're putting in. Good article - we need a change from morose apathy to exciting adventure - won't happen under Moyes.

There used to be a NIgerian music legend called Fela Kuti. He always had an opinion and spoke out against injustice or corruption, he was a rebel and most parents would ban their wards from going to his night club called The African Shrine because it was full of "grass smokers" and prostitutes (but it was a fun place). However his criticism of people in the public eye was largely accurate and some of his words are like prophesies now - he spoke what he percieved to be the truth and did not care whose ox was gored....John Nicholson kind of reminds me of him!

I am going to have to stop this but I agree with msj456(Liverpool) - It's has to be mentioned that there are not many managers able to claim that they could take a player of Djimi Traore's ability and make a champions league winner out of it (and the paella is always warm when it gets to the table). A straw poll on wich supporters would like DM as next in charge would be surprising to our sensationalist 'jackanory' hacks - I mean, what has he ever won? Yes, agreed Everton's fortunes were turned around by his management and he has sculpted a top ten side on a limited (comparatively) budget and I am respectful of that achievement. However, Is that something any side with top four pretentions should be looking for though. Lazy journalism, I'm sick of it - "Fellaini must play champions league football"; yes but why? Moyes must manage a 'bigger' team; again, why must he? Man U need Baines; erm they appear to be doing OK without him, scoop!

So he also makes some bad purchases? Great example, the whopping 2m spent on Andy van der meyde. It¿s not moyes¿ fault he gives the guy a chance but he would rather ¿ski on the cocaine slopes¿ of Liverpool city centre admiring the ¿British women and their miniskirts.¿ 2 bad buys for Davey, kroldrup and bill, we lost more than 3m on both, I couldn¿t name many other who we have not made a profit and/or has not improved us. We Everton fans do not ¿know¿ he would win the league with more finances, we also agree with most united and Chelsea fans, he is not ready for that jump yet, you have to win trophies to be considered for those jobs. He is however the next level down (i.e. not top3 and not arsene wenger). The proof is in the article, the fact that Moyes hasn¿t won a trophy/got in the champs league is seen as a failure shows how far Everton have come under his tenure. People say we have low expectations? No boys and girls, I have grown up watching 15 years of fighting for relegation, I thought folk who thought it was their blind unfounded divine right to constantly win things was on the other side of Stanley Park... If any Blue agrees with John, my question is who do we get in that will better him on that budget?

Surely this article can¿t be serious? While people are entitled to their opinions, John has (as usual) made crazy claims with no back up for his argument other than a few very poor frivolous examples. In 22 finals (44 teams) boro, pompey, Birmingham spurs and Liverpool have won a trophy in a season that they did not finish in the champions league the season before, Liverpool and spurs have champions league budgets anyway and the other three are no longer in the division. As for the ¿arry comment, how did he leave Pompey again?? On to finances next, we have spent similar to those clubs around us eh? Ok here is some net spending since 03/04 (year of the billionaires) to the present of clubs in and around us over this timescale: Liverpool 177m (yes even after receiving 50m for Torres), Villa 108m, spurs 102m, Stoke 78m (tony pulis, the real over rated manager), Sunderland 76m, QPR 72m, west ham 35m, Newcastle (spent a year in the championship and received 35 for Andy Carroll!) 14m and Everton? 8m, yes 8m. In fact over the past 5 years if we were a championship side we would have the 22nd highest net spend in the league. So no John, we have not spent similar.

@Nutboy, not that I really have any interest in knocking Spurs particularly, but surely 2 is a couple, not a few, and certainly not many. Few and many whilst open to personal discretion certainly aren't synonymous

Cesc_Formidable, far be it for me to defend Spurs but 2 is a few or several or many. Any number over 1 fits that bill. Look at a dictionary. You know, a book about words! Personally I really like Arsenal and even though I am an Everton fan I have seen Arsenal in the flesh nearly as often as Everton as my trips to the UK usually involve going to London.

If Moyes was foreign he wouldn't be as universally liked by the media men, sorry it's just true. Rafa Benitez wins a European Cup with a side not fit to be within 50 city blocks of the final and is treated as a football terrorist in the media for years. Scotsman finishes 8th with Everton and he's a grandmaster. I've always thought he's done a good job with them lot across town but the ascension of Hodgson to Liverpool boss showed doing well at a club on the verge of relegation when you took over doesn't mean you can rule Europe with a few better players and more cash to spend, so I've never understood this 'Moyes to United' bandwagon.

Sorry @tbassam but not quite right. There are other stats that show teams that gain points versus wage bill and Tottenham and Fulham have both done better than Everton - and, funnily enough, both have won cups during the same time as Moyes' tenure. Also, the stats trying to correlate Premier League points to wage bill don't correlate to cup competitions. Here Moyes has been completely inept. He has no strategy for two legged competitions and is too risk averse for one game cups. In fact, he does well in the league simply because he plays a risk averse game. This works well in leagues if simply trying to get into something like the top 8 or 10 but not to win. But you won't lose in a big way either. While we were willing to call out Big Sam at Bolton and even Stoke - who both, incidentally, had a high points to wage bill correlations as well - they both played in a similar vein. However, teams like Wigan and Swansea (again both exceeding Everton at times in wage to points) take a more risky approach to play. In the case of Swansea, it has paid off with a League cup win and a positon close to Everton. In fact, Swansea are exceeding Everton this year. So, in the end, Moyes is a good manager but not a great manager. He wins kudos because he is liked by Ferguson, has stayed at one club, is fairly good with the press - pretty honest and doesn't rub people the wrong way. Benitez took flack for going up against Ferguson, called out a number of things and got a bad rap, but won a Champions League, got to another final, won cups and came second in the league. Granted a higher wage bill than Everton, but in several of those years Moyes was in charge, had a higher points to wage bill correlation. Looks like the points to wage bill thing doesn't make Moyes great!
