m curious as to what image Real Madrid are trying to re-establish as I always thought their pre-Jose image was one of a bunch of a classless bullies tapping up whoever they wanted while living it large on borrowed money they're never going to pay back.

How on Earth is Jermain Defoe getting anywhere near the starting line-up? When exactly was the last time he scored? 26th December, vs Villa. One goal and one assist in his last 15 appearances for 'Spurs. Off the top of my head, other options could be (all last 15 apps): Rickie Lambert (7G, 1A), Jay Rodriguez (4G, 3A), Adam Le Fondre (8G, 1A), and that's just the Premier League. Even players like Agbonlahor are playing better than Defoe. I'd rather see Charlie Austin get a start than Defoe.
