The champions failed to break down a resolute Jose Mourinho side with clear-cut chances thin on the ground - and Terry highlighted the stalemate in midfield as the primary cause.

The veteran defender, who was named man-of-the-match, said: "Neither team had too many great chances to win the game. I think both teams looked solid. It's a great point for us away from home. We move on now.

"It was difficult. Both sides were easing off and letting eachother play from the back but there was a lot of pressure in the midfield and the sides cancelled eachother out a bit."

On his own place in the Chelsea team, Terry added: "It's good to be playing football, obviously. That's what I want to be doing. We spoke in the week about my place not being a given - it's down to me to work hard and prove myself to the management and the team."

"I can hopefully keep my place. There's an awful lot of competition throughout the squad."

The Red Devils fans felt their team should have had a second-half penalty when Tom Cleverley's volley appeared to strike Frank Lampard on the arm, but the Chelsea midfielder said afterwards: "I was only worried because in the modern day, it seems to be changing. For me, it's not a penalty. When you're challenging for a ball and you're half a yard away, what can you do?

"I was pleased. I think it's common sense sometimes from the ref. I've seen them given - sometimes it hits you on the shoulders and you get penalised for handball!"
