The Belgium winger was the guest of honour back at his former club on Sunday night as they entertained Monaco in Ligue 1.

Hazard was cheered by the Stade Pierre-Mauroy crowd when he took to the pitch at half-time and saw Lille win 2-0 courtesy of Nolan Roux's brace to move up to second in the table.

However, the 22-year-old, who cost Chelsea £32million when they signed him from Lille in June 2012, then missed his scheduled train back to London early the next morning and did not reach Cobham in time for Monday's session.

Consequently, Jose Mourinho punished Hazard by dropping him altogether from the Blues matchday squad for the 3-0 Champions League Group E win over Schalke at Stamford Bridge on Wednesday night.

Hazard has been assured his omission is only for one match though, with Mourinho telling reporters after the game: "Let's end the story. He's a kid, kids make mistakes and fathers they have to be clever in the way they educate their sons.

"He didn't play, he wanted to play. He's sad because he wanted to play.

"We won without him and Saturday, he's back. End of story."

Chelsea host West Brom in the Premier League on Saturday and will be looking to close the gap to two points on leaders Arsenal, who travel to Manchester United on Sunday.

Hazard has scored five goals in 15 appearances for Chelsea so far this season.
