Birmingham Crown Court: Where players are due

Michael Boateng, 22, and Hakeem Adelakun, 22, both from the Croydon area of South London, are accused of conspiring to defraud bookmakers by influencing the course of matches and placing bets.

Both were playing for the Conference South club Whitehawk, who are based in Brighton, but have been sacked since the allegations were made last month.

Boateng and Adelakun were the third and fourth people charged in connection with the investigation into an alleged international illegal betting syndicate.

Chann Sankaran and Krishna Sanjey Ganeshan, both originally from Singapore, were also charged and have been remanded in custody pending their second court appearance.

They are due at Birmingham Crown Court on Friday.

The lower leagues have long been seen as vulnerable to fixing because players do not earn anywhere near as much as their counterparts in the Premier League.

But the allegations tainting the name of the game at the moment are not restricted to that level.

DJ Campbell was not at training with Blackburn on Tuesday after it was confirmed he was one of six men, including five current or former players, arrested in a separate investigation by the National Crime Agency into spot-fixing.

The striker has played in the Premier League for Birmingham, Blackpool and QPR and, with the others questioned, has been bailed until April.

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
