Gareth Barry: Refusing to give up on England ambitions

The 32-year-old midfielder offered another timely reminder of his talents to national coach Roy Hodgson on Saturday with a star showing against Norwich City.

Barry opened the scoring in spectacular style against the Canaries, and Hodgson will have left Goodison Park impressed by what he saw.

He has, however, overlooked a man with 53 caps to his name ever since a groin injury ruled him out of Euro 2012.

Barry concedes that others have edged ahead of him in the Three Lions pecking order at present, but intends to keep himself in contention for a seat on the plane to Brazil this summer.

He said: "Yes, I'll definitely still be available. I've not spoken to the manager since I got injured after the Euros, so we will see.

"The manager knows about my game, so it's not like I'm young and coming through.

"He has used players who have rightly got the team qualified and generally he will, I'm sure, stick with those. But if things occur and he needs another player, I'm definitely still here.

"It won't be a case of joining up and being fresh and nervous. I would be able to settle straight back in and I'm sure the manager knows that. We will just wait and see."

While hoping his form over the remainder of the 2013/14 campaign keeps him in Hodgson's thoughts, Barry is also playing for his club future, with the end of his season-long loan at Everton set to coincide with the end of his contract at Manchester City.

On his domestic plans, Barry added: "It will just be a conversation to have at the end of the season.

"The manager (Roberto Martinez) said that when I signed there would be no pressure on myself or the club to make decisions around this time.

"I'm enjoying working with the manager, this is a great bunch of lads and it is a fantastic club. So certainly from that angle it is perfect."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
