@OpenG That was with Ferguson, he was the reason, nothing else, he's gone, along with the old certainties, you better get used to it. One bad managerial appointment a fallen club does make, as United under Wilf McGuinness and Liverpool under Souness have shown.

The team doesn't need an overhaul, last summer it needed 2-3 key signings, something Moyes failed to achieve. Moyes and his coaching staff are making a good squad look dreadful but that doesn't mean they are dreadful, which is also why United could spend as much as they like on players, while Moyes and his team of mediocrity are at United, the players will never be good enough. If he's such a great manager, and the right man for the job, why does he need world class players in every position to succeed, anyone could do that, why not get a top manager who is better at getting the most out of good players, as Rodgers is doing at Liverpool, for example? No, I'm not calling for Rodgers to replace Moyes, I'm simply pointing out that, with a weaker squad than United's, Liverpool are streets ahead in terms of style of play, the difference is the manager and the coaching staff.

@allaboutunited, Really? All about spending your own money? Yes, you have a great sponsorship deal. Yes, you have lots of cash coming in from merchandise. But, you have a very thin squad, thinned even further by several players leaving next year. When I £100M, I really meant closer to £130M. You realistically have DdG, RvP, WR, AJ, JM, MC, PJ, TC, (we're getting a bit thin here), JE, and CS. That's 5 good player and 5 other bodies. I would say that any decent team needs at least 8 good player plus another 8-10 squad players. So your team needs 3 more £20-30M players plus let's say 5 players at £10-15M. That would be roughly £120M + salaries. Your sponsorship deal only nets you <£30M/y and less than that for the merchandise. Add on the interest on your loan and you will still be spending more than you earn. That means either more debt or less spending. Either way you are screwed my friend. Unless the owners pony up some dosh, your team will be also rans for the near future.

A great player, but we've all seen the results this season. Vidic, Ferdinand and Evra have all been well below par. All 3 have seen better days. This isn't "a rat leaving a sinking ship". This is a senior player at the end of his contract leaving for one final fling elsewhere. He's not from Manchester, he was never a lifer. This was something we should be welcoming. The team needs an overhaul, starting with those over the age of 30 or below the required standard. Prior to this season he had played 25 league games from 76. His knees are iffy, to say the least, and he was never the quickest in the first place.

@chelseablue you clearly didn't watch vidic last season. We couldn't buy a clean sheet until he came back- he completely transformed the team and is still a top centre back- take your Adrian chiles "I don't Actually watch football I just go on general consensus" opinions elsewhere please.

@gab ah yes because we were useless in the league before van Persie arrived. You are delusional.

@tonyv25 in 1992 i was shagging lots of women and drinking way too much alcohol and to be honest United was the furthest thing from my mind. The only thing that is pathic is some untied fans are still in denial over that fact that the squad was in decline. Which evidently based on the season so far and the clearing out of dead wood by the current manager, which is what this whole article is really about, proves that decline your squad is in.Now these united fans defend their championship squad to prove it wasn't in decline by preaching stats that no one else to be honest, really gives a crap about.

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

Wenger hails important win

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
