Steven Gerrard: Liverpool captain has received praise from Andrea Pirlo

The Italy international operates for his cub and the national side in front of the defence and says that Gerrard has the ability to fill the 'quarterback' role as well.

Pirlo said: "The intelligent players adapt and Gerrard has the ability to do that.

"He is an excellent passer of the ball, possesses an intelligent football brain, and has great vision.

"Top European clubs are always progressing with what they can do off the field.

"Training is getting more scientific, and we are constantly getting more educated on nutrition.

"If you look after yourself and are willing to adapt, there is no reason why you can't play at the top level until your late 30's.

"Gerrard is a top professional, it is very possible he has many years left for Liverpool and England in a new role."

England face Italy in Manaus in World Cup Group D on 14th June.

Fair play to Gerrard - he's always been quality and there's been no club captain, for many years, who can drag a team up by his own bootstraps. 'Pool fans are right to be proud of him, one of the only players who I look for on the England team sheet these days and cheer on.

Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
