The Belgium international is currently third-choice centre-half behind Laurent Koscielny and Per Mertesacker, and has started just three league games this season.

Vermaelen currently has 18 months left on his contract and, despite not being first choice, Arsene Wenger has suggested that he is ready to talk about fresh terms.

However, Vermaelen told Het Laatste Nieuws: "It makes no sense to talk about it now.

"I have learned to make no long-term plans, so I won't say anything."

Vermaelen has been linked with a number of clubs, including Manchester United, Barcelona and Napoli, in recent months.

But his agent Kees Vos added: "We can't say anything on that matter."

lassic management. Build them up and then knock them back. Raise expectations and then dampen them. Create a dynamic where by you demand the most from your team, but where the team are given room to manoeuvre unexpected or unwanted results. Classy work by Van Gaal, he really reminds me a lot of me. A smart cookie, make no doubt.
