Adam Matthews twice set up Brown in the first half either side of gifting Niall McGinn an equaliser and Anthony Stokes put Celtic further ahead early in the second half.

Aberdeen contributed to an entertaining attacking game and Shaleum Logan soon pulled them back into it with an excellent solo goal.

But the Dons were controversially denied a penalty when Jonny Hayes went down under the challenge of Efe Ambrose and Commons took his tally for the season to 30 with a brace.

Consolation for Aberdeen came in the shape of Dundee United's 1-1 draw at Inverness, which means they cannot deny the Dons a top-three finish, although Motherwell closed the gap to one point in the race for second by beating St Johnstone 2-1.

United were trailing to Ryan Christie's early opener for Caley Thistle, yet they performed much better in the second half, with Farid El Alagui's strike earning them a deserved point.

At Fir Park, Lionel Ainsworth gave Motherwell the lead early on before Dave MacKay headed Saints level midway through the first half.

Stephen McManus got the decisive goal in controversial circumstances before half-time, his headed effort adjudged to have crossed the line before being punched clear by defender Steven Anderson.

Sam Stanton rescued what could prove to be a priceless point for 10-man Hibernian as they recorded a 1-1 draw against Partick Thistle.

The forward headed in an 88th-minute equaliser to secure a share of the spoils that leaves both teams two points clear of the relegation play-off place.

Partick went ahead against the run of play after eight minutes when Kris Doolan got a lucky break of the ball to score past Ben Williams.

Gregg Wylde's stunning winner took St Mirren another step closer to safety as the Buddies beat Ross County 1-0 in Paisley.
