Rooney is one of a handful of Hodgson's England squad under an injury cloud at the end of the Premier League season, the Manchester United striker having been sidelined with a groin problem in recent weeks.

But Hodgson is confident Rooney will not be a late withdrawal from the 23-man squad he named on Monday.

And he has praised Rooney for his decision to take two physios with him when he heads off for a brief post-season trip to Portugal.

"I said to the players that I am more than happy for them to go and forget football for a week and go and get themselves mentally prepared for the many weeks we have ahead," Hodgson said.

"But Wayne has decided to take some physios with him where he is going and to continue his programme as he is so determined that when we meet up on the 19th he'll be able to join in straight away.

"It's quite laudable that that's the way he thinks and I'm not trying to dissuade him. We have nothing to fear with Wayne.

"His attitude is spot on. His desire could not be better.

"Has he got the ability? Yes, he has, so it is just a case of bring on the matches and on that particular day Wayne Rooney can find the form that makes him who he is."

With the amount of money we are paying him,he can also afford a shrink, coz he slacked off to keep himself fit from my point of view in our games.Sturridge and Welbeck will be a better partnership, but because it's Rooney, they will not get a chance to prove themselves. He is just a good player, but definitely not world class.

heyremind me of Utd's treble winning side. Swashbuckling and risk prone. We ha Jaap Stam to paper over the cracks at the back though. Not sure they have their Jaap yet.

he solution is to not feel sorry for any of Jabba, Gold or Sullivan. They're all deeply unpleasant and all deserve each other. If only West Ham would sign Barton and Suarez then no one would ever need to despise any other club.
