The players to Portugal on Monday in preparation for the tournament after Hodgson named a relatively young squad last week.

Hodgson believes that, with the correct preparation, the team can flourish in Brazil and he is excited by what is in store over the next few weeks.

"Of course we'll go there thinking of winning it, believing it and working hard to do that," Hodgson stated.

"Can we play well enough? We have hope, dream and ambition. I'm not ruling out winning it. It would be foolish to go there thinking we can't win it or we're only there to make up the numbers.

"We've worked hard to get there and want to come home with people saying, 'Well done'. But there's only one way for that to happen, by preparing properly, competing in the best shape and get our minds right. That doesn't mean locking people up in their rooms and making them go through four-hour meetings.

"They're human beings and we want them to perform as well as they can perform.

"It's an exciting time. We're thinking more in terms of tailoring a programme to suit the players and where they are at the end of the season, which no doubt will vary slightly.

"We're thinking about the unit meetings we want to introduce, to make certain the players understand what we're looking for in them.

"It will be done mostly on the training ground, but the chances are in Portugal we'll do quite a lot in the unit meetings to save their legs a bit, because we don't want people to come back from Portugal tired.

"My initial thoughts were like a glorified training rest period, but we decided to move away from that, forget the "rest" part and keep it football. Of course it's still only one week since the end of the season, they still need some time to recover, but this is a time for fitness and to put some thoughts into their heads."

England begin their World Cup campaign against Italy on June 14 and also face Uruguay and Costa Rica in Group D.

ven if United were to sign CR7 & Messi to play upfront, the fact remains Fletcher and Cleverly are playing in midfield. That's where the problem is. Fletcher is too slow with an awful pass, while Cleverly is simply rubbish
