Meulensteen spent 11 years at United, working as a youth-team coach under Sir Alex Ferguson and later as first-team coach following Carlos Quieroz’s departure from the club to manage Real Madrid in 2008.

The 50-year-old left the club when David Moyes replaced Ferguson last year and has quashed speculation he could return when van Gaal takes over after this summer’s World Cup.

“No, no, no, no that’s not going to happen,” Meulensteen told Sky Sports.  “I do know him (van Gaal). I have not spoken to him but I do know that he is going to add one of his own people to his staff in that respect.

“There is no Rene Meulensteen going back to United.”

Meulensteen believes his compatriot faces a major task in overhauling the existing Manchester United squad in order to fulfil his objective of returning the club to the summit of the Premier League.

“He’s been given the task to sort of rebuild United from two perspectives basically,” Meulensteen said.

“Obviously he has to have a look at the team and see what’s left with obviously Vidic leaving, Rio Ferdinand leaving and one or two others. He needs to have a good look at that.

“Maybe there will be a few younger players coming through and the ones he wants to bring to really, really strengthen the squad to make sure he can have the best possible push to go and win.

“That is 100 per cent without a shadow of a doubt the objective. Louis Van Gaal will only come back to push to win the Premier League and that is at the same time where the danger lies because you need to be up to speed with the quality of the squad to be able to do that.”
