The Danish centre-back endured a stop-start 2013-14 season and there were reports that Liverpool might be looking to offload him this summer.

However, he captained the side for Wednesday’s 2-1 friendly loss to his former team Brondby and Rodgers says the 29-year-old is very much part of his plans for the upcoming season.

“Daniel is one of a number of excellent players that we have playing at the back,” said Rodgers.

“He has been unfortunate in the time that I've been at the club because the big issue for Dan has been his availability. He has been out injured for a number of games.

“But he's an excellent player, an international captain, and he's had a very good career at Liverpool.

"He's at a good age, 29, and his experience can be good for us this season. He signed a new contract last season.

"You saw in the first half (against Brondby) that he's an excellent player, a very good footballer and someone that is an important member of our squad."

@bobsys whilst I'd luv it if you played two left sided central defenders it would be a bit of a comedy. Unfortunately I think Agger will be off, he knows he's not first choice anymore, and further down the pecking order. Only reason Brendan is moving his chops, is because he knows he has no cover. Agger knows this, and knows he has to move to get regular first team football, because Brendan is a subtle as a punch in the gob. Pity, but unfortunately, here will be another good man gone.

All Platini is doing is making billionaries pay measly fines, so he and his cronies can get rich. If a fool can pay 50 mil for David Luiz, he will happily pay some fine to UEFA. FFP has failed as for it to succeed UEFA had to take it...
