United have announced that left-back Shaw has suffered a hamstring injury.

Shaw, who joined the Red Devils from Southampton in June for £27million, is expected to miss United's first three Barclays Premier League games, including their opener against Swansea on Saturday.

A statement on United's website read: "Luke Shaw has suffered a hamstring injury and will miss the opening game of the season against Swansea City on Saturday.

"The England international, a summer signing from Southampton, is likely to be sidelined for around four weeks.

"Shaw sat out the friendly victory against Valencia at Old Trafford due to the problem and faces a wait before making his competitive debut for the club."

Shaw, who was a member of England's World Cup squad in Brazil, has been struggling with his fitness since joining up with his new team during their pre-season trip to the United States.

The teenager will also miss the games against Sunderland, Burnley and QPR and may not be avalailable until the middle of September.

@highsociety - I'm always on the lookout for news stories that aren't reported on Sky/F365 and the other usual sites. Can you provide a link for the story about Shaw over-doing it in training? Oh, hang on... you got it from @badwolf didn't you. Did he forget to mention that he's not part of the United coaching team or a doctor? A hamstring tear (which is the most likely injury if it's going to mean a few weeks out) is usually caused by one sudden over-stretching of the leg, and not by more prolonged over-exertion. You're welcome. Now isn't there a story on here somewhere about how outstanding everything is at Liverpool, so that you don't need to clutch at straws over here?

put Ince in my fantasy football team, so it's no surprise at all really. I do that to players. Also responsible for De Jong and Upson being injured. Think I'll transfer in Di Maria just to ruin United....
