FERGIE TO DITCH DE GEA?
Here's a surprising story, if it's true. Which it probably isn't.

The Daily Mirror reports that Sir Alex Ferguson has lost patience with David de Gea, and will sign a replacement in the January transfer window.

The paper claims: 'Manchester United boss Ferguson has given the Spaniard every chance to fill the jersey at Old Trafford but doubts about his ability to handle the physical side are growing.

'And the shrewd United chief has asked supremo David Gill and the club's American owners to fund a buy for a genuine number one.'

And here's the funny bit - our old friend Alan Nixon suggests in the paper that Stoke's Asimir Begovic and Liverpool's Pepe Reina are possible targets.

Hmmmmm.

SOUTHAMPTON GAZUMP LIVERPOOL?
The Daily Mail reports that Liverpool have made an offer for Italian international defender Davide Astori, worth around £7million.

However, the bad news for Liverpool types is that Southampton have offered a little bit more.

The Mail claims: 'The 25-year-old defender is valued at£12m by his club Cagliari and Southampton have offered £9.5m and hope to strike a deal, with the Saints in particular need of defensive reinforcements after conceding 37 goals in the first half of the Premier League season.'

Meanwhile, the paper reckons Liverpool are struggling to complete a deal for Tom Ince. But you probably knew that.

WENGER WANTS A COUPLE
Hey, Arsenal are definitely, positively going to sign two players. Maybe. Sort of.

He said: "If we find one or two players then the squad can cope. I like to have a balanced squad."

The Daily Express suggests Montpellier defender Mapou Yanga-Mbiwa, Wigan midfielder James McCarthy and Barcelona striker David Villa, while The Daily Star reckons they're interested in Birmingham keeper Jack Butland.

NO NEW DEAL FOR LAMPARD
There had been talk in the Sunday papers that Chelsea were set to change their minds and offer Frank Lampard a new contract, but it seems that is tish and indeed fipsy.

The Daily Mirror quotes his agent, Steve Kutner, as saying: "Chelsea executives told Frank in Japan during the Club World Cup then again reconfirmed with me after the Everton victory that in no circumstances will he be offered a new contract to stay at the club after the end of this season.

"Nothing since has changed in any respect.

"Frank has had to accept that and just wants to carry on playing football for Chelsea so as to finish the season as successfully as possible for the club that he loves."
