The Countdown Gossip

Jackson Martinez to Chelsea and Salah to Spurs while United want Moreno, Coentrao or Alex Sandro at left-back...

MARTINEZ DEAL CLOSE
Only three of Chelsea's 21 Premier League goals this season have been scored by strikers so it seems inevitable that they will spend big on a forward this January. Radamel Falcao is said to be their first option but the back-up doesn't look too bad either: Porto's Jackson Martinez. According to Portuguese newspaper A Bola, the Colombian striker's agent flew to London on Tuesday with the aim of negotiating a deal. The Daily Mirror put the price at a cool £30m.

Elsewhere, Croatian newspaper Jutarnji claim that Sevilla midfielder Ivan Rakitic favours Chelsea over Manchester United and Liverpool if he makes a £13m move away from Spain next summer.

SALAH FOR SPURS?
It's gone so well with the wide players that Franco Baldini has brought to Spurs that it's no surprise that he's desperate to add another. The Italian watched Basel's £20m-rated Egyptian Mohamed Salah destroy Chelsea for the second time this season on Tuesday and could make a 'January swoop', according to the Daily Mirror.

LEFT-BACK TALK AHOY
Chelsea, Manchester United, Tottenham and Liverpool are all said to be wanting left-backs and that makes for a ridiculous amount of left-back gossip.

We'll start with the Daily Mail, who claim that Chelsea and United are both interested in Sevilla's Alberto Moreno, who is of course eligible to play in the Champions League this season. He is just 21 and is described as a possible 'long-term successor to England star Ashley Cole at Stamford Bridge'. Jose Mourinho is said to be a 'keen admirer' of the new Spanish international, but United and Real Madrid have also had him watched.

Talking of Real Madrid, United boss David Moyes is said to retain an interest in Fabio Coentrao and is 'ready to explore the possibility of signing him on a permanent basis' as hopes fade that they would be able to sign Leighton Baines for a reasonable price. Portuguese newspaper Record has other ideas, with Porto's Brazilian defender Alex Sandro reported to be a target for United as well as Inter Milan.

A little closer to home now and the Daily Mail claim that 'Tottenham are confident they are ahead of Chelsea and Manchester United in the race to sign Southampton star Luke Shaw' but that he will a) not move in January and b) will cost £30m if he moves next summer.

And the Daily Telegraph claim that Liverpool could pick up the scraps and return to Chelsea with an £8m bid for Ryan Bertrand in January. Although he is settled at Chelsea, he has had to watch right-back Cesar Aspilicueta leapfrog both him and Cole at left-back.

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
