United to spend £50m (!!!) on Ross Barkley, Chelsea close to Alonson, Liverpool in for Udinese star and more...

We wouldn't normally lead on a local paper, but when the story is as ballsy as this we really have rather little choice.

The Manchester Evening News last night went all out with a story suggesting that England's New Kid On The Block Ross Barkley is not only wanted by Manchester United, but that the club are prepared to make him the tenth most expensive signing of all time.

The paper claim that United hierarchy believe that a £50million bid would get Everton talking (let's face it, it would get us all talking), despite Roberto Martinez's claims that Everton would not even sell for a world record fee.

The MEN do rather skirt over the following issues:
1) Will United really spend £50m on a player
2) If they did, would it really be on an attacking midfielder?
3) If it was, would the target of that £50m bid really be Barkley?
4) Given the sourness of the relationship after the Marouane Fellaini - Leighton Baines summer saga, would Everton really sell to United?
5) Does Neil Warnock now wish he'd picked Barkley for Leeds last season?

Forgive us if we're a touch dubious for now.

We can't see why every club in Europe wouldn't want to have Xabi Alonso patrolling their midfield, even at the age of 32, and it the Daily Express believe that Chelsea are particularly confident of signing the Spaniard.

Alonso has reportedly turned down contract talks at Real Madrid in order to become a free agent next summer, and is thought to be keen on a move back to England.

Chelsea would apparently be prepared to offer the former Liverpool midfielder a two-year deal with the option of a third, something Alonso would understandably keen to take given his age.

Xabi Alonso older than Michael Essien. It's a funny world.

Despite the welcome return of Lucas Leiva to the Liverpool side, the Metro this morning report that Brendan Rodgers is still keen to bolster his defensive midfield options, with Ghanaian Emmanuel Agyemang-Badu top of the list.

The 23-year-old is currently plying his trade rather aggressively for Udinese in Serie A, and is comfortable in both midfield and central defence.

The paper go as far as to claim that the Anfield club are preparing a £7million January bid for a player who has actually started less than 30 Serie A games during his five years in Italy.

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
