Manchester City eye up Martin Skrtel, Chelsea want to replace Mikel (again) and United in for Thiago's brother...

It would be pretty evident to remark that there is space for a summer defensive arrival at the Etihad this summer, particularly if Joleon Lescott is allowed to move abroad, as expected.

The Daily Mail believe that Skrtel may be their main target to partner Vincent Kompany next season, and whilst the Slovakian is happy on Merseyside, should Liverpool fail to qualify for the Champions League City may be able to tempt him down the M62.

Skrtel signed a contract extension in August 2012, and while the paper don't discuss a possible fee, we can assume that it would be filed under 'hefty'.

CHELSEA SEEK MIKEL REPLACEMENT
We rather thought that the arrival of Nemanja Matic had solved Chelsea's central midfield options, but the Metro today report that Marseille's Gianelli Imbula is also on Jose Mourinho's radar.

The Frenchman (who also has Congolese citizenship) only joined L'OM last summer after winning Ligue 2 Player of the Year with Guingamp, and is rumoured to have been watched by Chelsea ever since.

We end up saying this about five times a season, but what Chelsea really need is another midfielder.

UNITED IN FOR ALCANTARA
After David Moyes missed out on the signing of Thiago Alcantara to Bayern Munich last summer, the Manchester United seems intent on making it a family affair by now trying to sign his brother. So says the Daily Express.

Rafa Alcantara, better known as Rafinha, is just 21 and has spent the season on loan at Celta Vigo, where has impressed, and is tipped to break into the Barcelona first team next season, with United paying close attention to his progress.

Rafinha is an attacking midfielder, perhaps not exactly the biggest concern for United's squad this summer?

I'm pretty sure City won't be looking to replace Lescott with Skrtel for the same reason that Lescott currently doesn't get much of a look in. Good defenders that they are, neither are good enough on the ball.

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

H

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

I

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
