That's according to The Sun, who claim the Manchester United manager has already seen enough of his squad to know an expensive overhaul is required.

'Van Gaal has told the Manchester United board he needs five more players - and it will cost £100million,' report The Sun.

The players in question are Thomas Vermaelen, Mats Hummels, Stefan De Vrij, Daley Blind and Angel Di Maria, with strengthening United's defence clearly a priority for Van Gaal.

Ed Woodward has apparently been handed the list and told he needs to get to work on a spending spree that could take United's overall outlay to around £160m.

West Ham have made a move for Samuel Eto'o after Andy Carroll was ruled out for four months with an ankle injury.

Eto'o was released by Chelsea at the end of last season and has been linked with a move to the US. However, The Sun now report: 'The Hammers have made contact with his agent Claudio Vigorelli as they seek to find a replacement for crocked Andy Carroll.

'Owners David Sullivan and David Gold know they must move quickly for Cameroon star Eto'o, 33, after his people held talks with QPR and Italian champions Juventus.'

According to the Daily Star, Liverpool and Arsenal are ready to go head to head in the race for Hoffenheim forward Roberto Firmino.

The Brazilian scored 16 goals and claimed 11 assists in the Bundesliga last season, alerting a number of top clubs to his talents.

'Liverpool have already made a £12million bid but that was rejected by the German side,' report the Star, who add that Arsenal's Joel Campbell is a £13m target for AC Milan.
