Joleon Lescott: Keen to keep 2014 World Cup dream alive

Joleon Lescott: Keen to keep 2014 World Cup dream alive

The defender is soon to enter the final year of his contract at the Etihad Stadium and has yet to bank a new deal.

He is no longer first choice under Roberto Mancini and was initially left out of the England squad for qualifiers against San Marino and Montenegro, only to be recalled after a string of injury withdrawals.

And though he is keen to stay at City the 30-year-old hopes the club will "show him respect" when it comes to settling his future.

He told the Daily Telegraph: "If someone said when I signed here 'you're going to win the Premier League, get to two FA Cup finals and represent your country in the Euros I'd have snapped their hand off.

"So now to go into the final year of my contract uncertain about my future is quite strange. I'd love to stay. My wife's pregnant, we've just moved house, the kids are happy at school.

"But I'm not naive. When you've achieved all that and you're going into the last year of your contract your future might be elsewhere.

"I can't afford to go into a World Cup year being uncertain of whether I'm going to play [regularly] here.

"I feel I've done enough for the club to demand a bit of respect in terms of they come and tell me what they want, whether it's a new deal, which I would be delighted to sign, or [to go] elsewhere.

"I'm very respectful of the club with what they've done for me, how they were persistent when Everton were digging their heels in to keep me. I owe a lot to the club. I also feel I've done enough to demand a bit of respect to not see speculation about my future."

I

may well get slated by other United fans for this, but out of the three contenders, I'd far prefer Liverpool to win the title. Yes some elements of their fanbase can be a bit OTT, yes they're our biggest rivals and yes it will make our poor season feel even more like the end of an era (Fergie's gone, Liverpool are back on top). However I just have to applaud Brendan Rodgers and the way he's turned Liverpool around in just a couple of seasons. It...

ooray! We are all excited now, we beat a very mediocre team! With all due respect to WHU supporters, not winning that game shouldn't even be a consideration. This is the problem, there is no winning mentality at the Emirates - we're all congratulating ourselves beating a team that we have a winning record against.

s this meant to be an aspiration for United supporters? Moyes mediocrity strikes again. I see the Bayern boys don't want to sign for him, and his reputation amongst the senior European coaches make other key signings unlikely.
