Eric Abidal: 'I want to continue playing at the club'

The France defender made his first-team comeback this month after over a year out following liver surgery.

Abidal had been recovering after undergoing a liver transplant last April, having previously had surgery to remove a tumour in March 2011.

The full-back's contract runs out in June and, while there have been reports in Spain that Barca may offer him an ambassadorial role, the 33-year-old is keen to continue playing.

He told Spanish radio station RAC1: "If my health permits I want to continue playing at the club but my contract ends in June.

"What if they do not call me?

"Someone told me something (about an ambassador's role) but not directly. I know that the president has plans for me.

"Anyway, only I can decide my future.

"Time and God will say if I can't go on and if then I have to be an ambassador, I would be happy.

"I would retire at the club but it depends on them, not me."

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.
