Knowing that victory at Hillsborough on Saturday would see them clinch second place in League One ahead of arch-rivals Sheffield United, Michail Antonio gave Wednesday a 25th-minute lead following a burst into the area.

Wycombe keeper Nikki Bull, who had kept the home side at bay with some fine saves, was beaten again by Nile Ranger's 52nd-minute header.

After Wednesday's Championship return was sealed, Jones said: "It was about just winning the game. To be honest, I don't care if we played good, bad or indifferent. It was only the result that mattered.

"It's the best feeling in the world to win promotion. It's Wednesday's day and we've got to enjoy it, which we will do. My remit was promotion. That's was all the chairman said. It's nice to come into a football club when they're not fighting relegation."

Jones continued: "I'm pleased for the chairman because he made a big call. When I arrived, the chairman was criticised by a section of fans. I've repaid him in the best way I could by delivering what he wanted and what he deserves. I've got nothing but good things to say about him. I've had nothing but support from him."
