Chief executive Stewart Regan confirmed that preliminary talks had taken place and that the board have been impressed by the job done so far by caretaker Billy Stark following the 2-1 win over Luxembourg.

"As well as providing a much-needed victory, Billy has impressed us greatly by the way he has conducted himself in the role," said Regan.

"The Board is committed to confirming a permanent appointment in enough time to prepare for the qualifier against Wales.

"We are committed to appointing the best coach possible and will take the necessary time to achieve that objective.

"I can assure the supporters the board of the Scottish FA are focused on appointing a coach who can lead us to qualification for the European Championships in 2016."

Scotland's next fixture is a friendly against Estonia at Pittodrie in February while former internationals Gordon Strachan and Joe Jordan are the current favourites for the post among the supporters.
