Mancini was in the stands on Sunday to watch the 19-year-old in Serie A action.

He impressed during a run-out against Roma, netting Sampdoria's third goal in a 3-1 win, and sent Mancini back to England mulling over a possible summer approach.

It was suggested that the City manager was actually in Italy to cast an eye over Roma's Brazilian full-back Marquinhos, who is also believed to be attracting interest from Barcelona.

It was, however, Icardi who made a lasting impression on the Blues boss.

The Argentina U20 international was the subject of a sizeable bid from Napoli during the winter transfer window, while Inter Milan are said to be keen on putting a summer deal in place.

Icardi could soon be on his way to England, though, with few sides capable of competing with City's spending power in the transfer market.

Mancini said of the talented youngster: "He scored a great goal and moved very well and I must say I liked him."

@Maurizio.....I dont even know what you are going on about now, the point people are making on here....and it might help if you got an adult to read the comments to you....is that City dont give youth a chance. Thats just a simple fact, we all know this, expert, pundits even the England manager have all expressed concerns about your club are wasting young kids careers. Ask Johnson, ask Savic, ask Guidetti, ask Scott Sinclair......dont need to take our word for it.....and we certainly dont need to take yours!

m starting to think Roman may never actually be happy at the top level. If he wants all conquering fancy football I wonder if he'd be better off buying a lower division side then paying outlandish salaries to attract high caliber players too good for the division.

afa has to be favourite for the Everton job now, surely :) He'll realise his ambition to live and work on Merseyside again, get the best out of whoever plays for them, maybe win some cups and be thoroughly loathed by the toffee fans. What's not to like? Go ead, Ken, gimajob!

hat is arguably the least inspiring England I have ever seen. There is not a single name in that list that makes me think I might actually want to watch this team. Not a one.
