Assou-Ekotto can earn his Spurs

FanZone's Nik Wardle believes Benoit Assou-Ekotto deserves a regular first-team place - and would be gutted if he leaves Tottenham this summer.

He has been fit since around Christmas, but still Benoit Assou-Ekotto (Benny) isn't an automatic first pick for Spurs. I'm baffled by this and hope he won't be exiting White Hart Lane this summer.

Benny's honesty about why he's plying his trade in football is well documented, but I still think he's one of Spurs' better players. I certainly think he's our best left-back and struggle to understand why AVB doesn't pick him every week.

He does come across as being casual and does have the odd lapse - but who doesn't? He gets in many blocks and tackles, is pacey and is also very useful going forward.

Kyle Naughton, who AVB preferred on Saturday, is a decent defender, but being a right-footed left-back, has to check inside when attacking, which slows the momentum. We don't have this problem with Benny. He bombs forward and gets several crosses a game in (when there's someone to cross it to).

Naughton is improving, but I still think Benny is the better player. Danny Rose is due back from Sunderland in the summer, where he has been earning rave reviews. It will be interesting to see if he has a future at Spurs. More of a winger, initially, Rose is learning to play left-back and, like Benny, could be a useful attacking option for the team.

In the modern era, full-backs often play like wing-backs/wide midfielders, so it's useful to have players who are good going forward.

We obviously need to beat Southampton on Saturday. They're likely to get men behind the ball, so our full-backs will play a key attacking role. And I think there are few better attacking pairs than Benny and Kyle Walker in the Premier League.

I think we'll have more chance of winning our final four games with Benny in the side and I hope he's given a more prominent role next season, as I would hate to see him leave.

resumably, you wanted to keep the version of Downing that was never seen at Anfield. The one that another manager has managed to re-create. The one you passed over.

he uber commercialisation of the 90s has led to the point where this overly familar, try hard, jolly hockey sticks type fronts up a major football match on a weekly basis. Unlike the great presenters of yesteryear, I doubt he would even recognise the scent of Brut.
