Spurs were held 1-1 in the Premier League as John Terry headed home an equaliser in the second half after Gylfi Sigurdsson had opened the scoring on 19 minutes.

Villas-Boas believes a point apiece was a fair result after Tottenham had the better of the first half and Chelsea responded strongly after the interval.

However, he insisted after the final whistle there was still a long way to go in the title race and Chelsea may be in a slightly better position after two away games against fellow contenders.

"It was a difficult, hard battle between two teams that wanted to win the game," he said.

"It was a fair result but the league won't be decided on games like these.

"The result serves Chelsea better as they have already been to Manchester United and Tottenham and drawn."

Fernando Torres was sent off in the 81st minute following an aerial challenge with Jan Vertonghen which did not appear to be a foul, and Villas-Boas had some sympathy for Chelsea's Spanish striker.

He said: "The sending-off was difficult for the referee to judge but it was a bit dubious and unfair on Fernando."
